.Los Angeles Center for Digital Art

http://lacda.com/index.html

Los Angeles Center for Digital Art

The Los Angeles Center for Digital Art is located in the area known as gallery row. The center focuses on digital art in the contemporary area. Dedicated to spreading photography, new media, video, and interactive media, the center encapsulates the forward-thinking blend of using science to create art. This hybrid is the basis of photography itself. The center has an ongoing array of exhibits in the gallery and is known to include international works. However the space is also dedicated to supporting the local community art scene by giving exposure to Los Angeles area artists. Outside of the LACDA space, they are involved with curating digital exhibits at institutions and festivals.

The Los Angeles Center for Digital Art was established in April of 2004 as a venue to support the efforts of the burgeoning scene revolving around art and technology. Also known as "LACDA," its founder and director of the gallery, Rex Bruce, had his first experience with art and computers in 1980 creating control voltages for analog synthesizers using an IMSAI 8080 computer and the C+ language. His subsequent extensive career and education in the field of electronic interdisciplinary art led to the creation of LACDA spawning many novel approaches to funding and programming for computer oriented fine arts.

The first location for LACDA was on Melrose Avenue in Hollywood utilizing two spaces at RBC Studios, a building variously occupied by musicians, artists, writers and other creatives. After a short six months of early success there garnering notices in publications such as the L.A. Weekly and L.A. Times, director Rex Bruce became involved in the development of the nascent scene in the area now dubbed "Gallery Row" in the Historic Core of downtown Los Angeles. A new space was secured on 5th Street at South Main where five galleries were established simultaneously in an organized effort involving the gallery owners, the support of the L.A. Board of Supervisors, DLANC (Downtown Los Angleles Neighborhood Council), and developer Rob Frontiera who was then owner of the two Rosslyn Hotel buildings where the cluster of galleries resided.

Bert Green, owner of Bert Green Fine Art, established the monthly "Downtown Art Walk" in 2005 which began with a draw of 75 people and grew to about 15,000 visitors and over 40 galleries by 2010. The Downtown Art Walk, along with collaborations with the Downtown Film Festival, California Museum of Photography, Guggenheim Gallery, PhotoLA, College Art Association, New Media Caucus, SIGGRAPH, The Grammy Museum, ArtSpot Miami and other similar organizations and festivals established LACDA as a viable presenter of new media art to a broad based public as well as engaging the core art scene of critics and curators in Los Angeles and beyond.

While known for some success as a commercial gallery (selling new media work largely being regarded as more of an experiment than an established market), the LACDA maintains sustainability through its series of calls for entries, including juried competitions and open exhibits such as "Snap to Grid" where every artist submitting is exhibited without any curation. The center is also involved in printmaking, utilizing wide format inkjet printers, and has had success raising funds sustaining LACDA exhibition programming through its printmaking efforts. The printmaking allowed for a series of large group salon style exhibits giving exhibition opportunity to more artists while creating economic viability for the gallery especially through the downturn caused by the great recession beginning in 2007.

In February of 2011 the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art took over the lease at 102 W. 5th St. at the former location of Bert Green Fine Art (which is now located in Chicago). With 3,800 square feet and extensive window display areas the exhibit area effectively tripled, creating growth in the number and variety of exhibits and creative communities LACDA could accommodate. This location was scheduled for major seismic and infrastructure upgrades late in 2013. After a short break in programming, LACDA moved to its current location funded by a federal relocation grant and procuring a ten year lease at 104 East Fourth Street, a Gilmore Associates property. Tom Gilmore is known for his long standing support for the arts and the new location was leased at favorable terms. The new location adds 70 additional linear feet of interior wall space and includes four window bays that accomodate 50 inch monitors for rotation of video exhibits that can be viewed from interior seating or from the exterior through copious display windows.

STATEMENT :

Frances  Gérard  was born in 1955 in France .                                                                                                             DSC03425
He presently lives and works in Paris and Languedoc .

His painting research is essentially based on the various expressive alternatives
Of china ink using a very personal technique .
Altough taking his inspiration mainly from reality   (  landscapes , figures ,  objects  )
Frances gérard do nor limit to it , reducing to the essential the naturalistic and descriptive
Aspects ,with a tendency to abstract .
(  sky - land  .   horizontal - vertical .   primary colors   -    geometrical work  -
external reality an interieur world . )

Personal technique and artist concept

My tool is the chinese brush and my canvas is the paper .
Three fluids - mixing -  on the brush -

Oil - ink - water -
Ink and water : fusion
Oil and ink : opposition
Water : mediation

My works took a direction that resulted in artwork toward a new language -
My work express painting the freedom to do art and the own art -
The masters gave me impulse , influenced my work by the grandiosity of
Their immortal art .

Reference  - on the traces for ancient cultures
Calligraphy - chinese painting - miniature art -
Dialogue :  orient  -  occident  -
Texts and theory on painting -
Shitao : les propos sur la peinture du moine citrouille amere -
Le yuntai shan de gu kaizhi : les premieres peintures de paysage en chine -
The spirit of the brush

A painting is often represented by its intelligence an  its sensitivity -
I feel it very important for an artist to participate in events as it allows him
to share his artistic ideas , express himself and to meet a world of people with an equal passion for art -

Art is the expression of all cultures .

Photography  /  Research /  Saturation / unretouched photos

Photography, Urban Art, Cityscape, hypersaturation, high saturation , Nature , Photography of photography , shadowy figure.......

Color and b/w digital photos, color and b/w digital elaborations, works created on the computer.

This photo with "hypersaturation" is part of a technique issued from the digital camera.

Hypersaturation creates abstraction and hides the underlying reality of the orginal photo creating in turn curiosity .

La photographie est en rapport avec l’ombre, à la fois de façon littérale en impliquant la lumière ,

mais aussi dans la métaphore de la disparition et de la trace. ( Shadowy figure )

Recherche sur la nature :  Mutation /  Saturation / Variation  ( Sans retouche )

 DEMARCHE ARTISTIQUE (ARTIST CONCEPT)                                                                                                              DSC1

CONCEPTIONS CHINOISE ET OCCIDENTALE DE LA PEINTURE EN RAPPORT AVEC LA NOUVELLE TECHNIQUE

NATURE ET CULTURE

LA CULTURE EST EN CHINE DE L' ORDRE DE LA NATURE ; LES NERVURES QUI SE DISENT WEN  EN CHINOIS. WEN  DESIGNE LES VEINES DANS LE BOIS OU DANS LA PIERRE. L'ETYMOLOGIE DE CULTURE EST PRECISEMENT WEN LA MARBRURE. C EST POURQUOI LA CULTURE WEN EST CONSIDERE COMME UNE MANIFESTATION DE LA NATURE DU MOUVEMENTS DU MONDE EN PERPETUELLE MUTATION TEL QUE LES CHINOIS LE CONCOIVENT .  CE   QU' ILS APPELLENT CULTURE, C' EST CETTE VEINE MARQUANT LE PASSAGE DE L'INDETERMINE AU DETERMINE.  C' EST A DIRE LES MUTATIONS ISSUE  DU DAO.

LE DAO PRODUIT  LE UN ET LE UN DONNE NAISSANCE AU DEUX : LE YIN ET LE YANG SONT ISSUS DU CHAOS ORIGINAL. LES INTERACTIONS ENTRE YIN ET YANG PRODUISENT LES EXISTANTS : ROCHERS, NUAGES, MONTAGNES, CONSTELLATIONS. DE MEME PAR ANALOGIE LA PAIRE PINCEAU -  YANG  ET L ENCRE -  YIN ,  CREENT SUR LE PAPIER DES FORMES DONT LA VALEUR  EXISTENTIELLE EST TOUT AUSSI EFFICACE QUE CELLE DES EXISTANTS DE LA NATURE. C' EST LE LINGQI   - SOUFFLES ANIMES.

POUR REVENIR A MES RECHERCHES, JE DIRAIS QUE LA DUALITE CHINOISE YIN YANG  EST ABANDONNEE AU PROFIT D' UNE TRILOGIE : HUILE - ENCRE - EAU .
EN EFFET L'HUILE ENTRE EN OPPOSITION AVEC L'ENCRE PENDANT QUE L EAU SERT DE MEDIATEUR  ( MELANGE DES TROIS LIQUIDES SUR LE PINCEAU ). C'EST A DIRE QUE L ' APPORT    D'EAU SUR LE PINCEAU AUGMENTE L' OPPOSITION AVEC L' HUILE TOUT EN ECLAIRANT LA TONALITE DE L ENCRE. CE CONFLIT REGULÉ PAR LE CHOIX DES LIQUIDES (PRESSION ET   VITESSE DU PINCEAU) FAIT APPARAITRE SUR LA FEUILLE UN LAVIS OU LES RIDES ET LES VALEURS NAISSENT DANS LE MEME  TEMPS.
DESSINER DANS LA COULEUR  ( HENRI  MATISSE )

LA COULEUR N'A PLUS A ETRE LIMITEE PAR LE TRAIT PUISQU' ELLE EST ELLE   MEME  CONSTRUITE SUR LA LIMITE DES OPPOSITIONS DES DEUX LIQUIDES.
LA COULEUR -LAVIS  DEVIENT A CE TITRE LE SUPPORT IDEAL POUR RENDRE COMPTE DU CARACTERE A LA FOIS FRAGMENTAIRE ET HOMOGENE DU MONDE VISIBLE. UN LAVIS FAIT DE  STRATES ET DE PLIS   ANIMÉ ET PROFOND, DOTÉ D'UN  RELIEF QUE SOULIGNE CHAQUE POIL DU PINCEAU .
LA TRACE  JOUE UN ROLE CAPITAL DANS L'ACTIVITE ARTISTIQUE.

« PEINDRE, C' EST TRACER A L' AIDE DU COUP DE PINCEAU »

ZHANG YANYUAN (V°  SIECLE)

C'EST POURQUOI JE ME SUIS CONCENTRÉ SUR LA STRUCTURE DU LAVIS,  BASE DE LA COMPOSITION ET DE L'INTENTION OU ESPRIT
DE L'ARTISTE.                  .
